MANILA, Philippines – EJ Obiena capped off an outstanding performance on Sunday at the 2022 Golden Fly Liechtenstein with another gold victory.
The third-ranked pole vaulter in the world easily defeated his rival by clearing the bar with a leap of 5.71 meters in his final outdoor competition of the year and this season.
Obiena’s triumph was the capstone of his successful second part of the season, during which time he set a new Asian record by winning five gold medals in a row in seven different competitions over three weeks.
Obiena’s victory over Olympic gold winner and world record holder Mondo Duplantis in the Diamond League Memorial Van Damme in Brussels was the most notable of these victories.
Ricardo Klotz placed third with a 5.51, and Olen Tray Oates won the silver medal with a 5.61.
The Filipino athlete however failed in his attempt to win the six-meter race.
“Exactly one year ago today, I broke the 29 year old Asian record in outdoor pole vault by jumping 5.93m. A lot has happened since then, and just a few hours ago, almost did 6m. As usual, we keep on trying and keep on fighting, for the country,” told Obiena in a Facebook post.
Obiena set the Asian pole vault record last year by clearing 5.93m in the 2021 Golden Roof Challenge.
