After authorities in Paranaque City completed an operation, five South Korean members of a syndicate allegedly using text scams to defraud were arrested.

The money obtained by the suspects from the victims will exceed P1 billion.

The five South Korean fugitives were apprehended in an exclusive subdivision in Paranaque City by the Bureau of Immigration-Fugitive Search Unit, the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, and the South Korean Police.

According to the FSU, the Korean criminal syndicate is operating in the Philippines using text scams to victimize fellow Koreans.

“They send texts to their victims that include a link, and when they click this link will install malware on their cellphones where they can monitor their victim’s cell phone activity.” said BI FSU chief Rendel Sy.

The authorities are still investigating whether there are any victims in the Philippines.
